exas is famous for its wildflowers and there is no finer place to start our tour than in the historic Hangar Hotel in Fredericksburg - deep in the heart of wildflower country. This GreatPhotography workshop gives you the best that Texas has to offer. You'll split your time in the Texas Hill Country between enjoying the tapestry of colorful wildflowers, and the historic Hangar Hotel where you'll step back in time to the romance of 1940's aviation.

We start our workshop focusing on photographic lighting in this historic location deep in the heart of wildflower country where you'll step back in time to the romance of 1940's aviation.

  • Learn about the qualities of  light
  • Master your camera's flash
  • Use mixed lighting sources for spectacular effects
  • Learn the tricks of shooting indoors
  • Find out why light painting is just so much fun!!

Weather permitting, we are planning on setting up a shoot of a vintage aircraft on the tarmac in front of the hotel.  We'll plan on using the dwindling twilight, tungsten lights, camera strobes, flashlights and more to create a stunning image.

  • Find out what it takes to turn your captured image into a masterpiece.
  • Photoshop techniques - we take the captured image and show how to edit to create a marketable / frameable print.
  • Understand the tools used in a digital workflow

This is the only GreatPhotography workshop where you can enjoy the expert instruction of two outstanding photographers.  Other topics that we will cover include;

  • Hyperfocal techniques to get maximum depth of field
  • Shooting macro - it's a whole new world
  • Wide angle, normal, prime, telephoto - when to choose which
  • Shooting Texas wildflowers
  • Using light modifiers
  • The perfect white balance
  • Mastering your camera's light meter

The Hangar Hotel is our home for the first two nights of the workshop and this is one of those unique locations that sells out quickly.  If you're at all interested in the workshop, sign up today to ensure your place.

This is the only GreatPhotography workshop where you can enjoy the expert instruction of two outstanding photographers.  Joining me in Fredericksburg is  Griff Smith, one of Texas' most notable photographers and a full time shooter for Texas Highways magazine.

While at the Hangar Hotel, Griff Smith will show you how he approaches an assignment with the magazine. You’ll plan and shoot an entire series of images that will tell the story of the hotel culminating in one of our most popular sessions when we light-paint a vintage aircraft on the runway.

You’ll explore how to use studio strobes, tungsten lights and small portable strobes to give your photographs that edge and sparkle.
Relive history when you stay in one of the hotels period rooms and sip a drink in the "officers club".

What You'll See

In addition to the hotel, we'll explore the back roads and parks in the Texas Hill Country photographing some of the most spectacular displays of wildflowers around.   Inks Lake State Park has been a favorite location for viewing wildflowers for years.  Even in years when the wildflowers are not putting on a great display, we've got secret places to so so you'll be sure to bring home some stunning wildflower images.  Oh, don't forget the awesome barbeque in Llano.
