he Canadian Rockies - grand masterpiece of the West. From quiet meadows to thundering waterfalls, towering peaks to misty canyons. There are few words to describe the stunning beauty of this photographer's playground. The area offers a natural richness that is becoming increasingly rare and which has been recognized by being designated a United National World Heritage Site.

Come photograph stunning azure blue glacier-fed lakes, big-horn sheep, elk and moose. We base our activities in Banff, the crown jewel of the Canadian Rockies, just minutes away from some of the most beautiful photogenic scenery in the world. You have to experience Banff at least once in your life.

The Canadian Rockies National Parks are a collection of four parks that cover 20,000 square kilometers of some of the world's most beautiful sights. We will base our activities in the picturesque town of Banff where you'll venture out to photograph the azure blue waters of glacier-fed Lake Moraine with the foreboding cliffs of the Wenkchemna Peaks as a backdrop. You'll explore the uniquely carved limestone of Johnston Canyon on an ingenious suspended walkway that gets you down close to the cascading water and the canyon's seven waterfalls. You'll also find out why the name of the 380 meter-high Takakkaw Falls is Cree for "It is wonderful!"

What You'll See

The Canadian Rockies are a must on any photographers list of places to see.  The absolute awe-inspiring beauty is unparalleled anywhere in the world.  Described as the grand masterpiece of the West, the Canadian Rockies are a tapestry of quite meadows, thundering waterfalls, towering peaks and bright azure blue lakes.  Below are just a few of the locations we'll photograph during our workshop.

Lake Moraine
Lake Moraine is one of the most photogenic spots in the Canadian Rockies.  And yes, the water is that blue!  The blue color in the water is due to the fine glacial silt which continuously washes into the lake from the glaciers high above.  The subjects and compositions are bounded only by your imagination and time.  We'll photograph along the lake shore and from the "rock pile" at the base of the Tower of Babel.  And when it's time for lunch you can enjoy a meal at the Lake Moraine Lodge.
Takakkaw Falls
Takakkaw, Cree for "It is wonderful" is an apt name for this 380 meter high waterfall.  Fed by melting glaciers high above, the waterfall sparkles with a rainbow in the late afternoon light.  Wait too long though and the sun drops behind the mountain range behind you.
Peyto Lake
Peyto Lake (pictured) is truly an icon of the Canadian Rockies. Nestled high on Bow Summit, this glacier fed lake is a "must see".  The blue water is spectacular and if you time your visit just right, you can accentuate the colors of the lake with the shadows of the mountains.
Johnston Canyon
Fed by Bonnet Glacier, Johnston Creek has flowed for thousands of years through the soft limestone carving a deep gorge.  To view this impressive creek we'll use an ingenious suspended walkway that takes you deep into the gorge and close the the roaring water and impressive waterfalls and rock formations.

Climate and Apparel

Banff is located high in the Canadian Rockies.  Lake Louise, our home base for the workshop is at an altitude of 5,000 feet.  When we visit Peyto Lake perched high atop the Bow Summit we'll be at over 6,700 feet.  Needless to say, the weather can be unpredictable.

During the workshop, the average daily high temperature is a comfortable 61 degrees while the evening can chill to the mid 30's.  It's not unusual to have snow on Peyto Lake in the middle of the summer months.  The picture above was taken in July!

Workshop participants should prepare for a wide range of weather conditions. Rainwear is recommended and the chilly mornings dictate multi-layered clothing, hats, mittens and warm foot wear. Inclement weather actually adds a wonderful mood to photographs so the field schedule will only be altered if the weather turns dangerous.
