On Assignment with Griff Smith

Joining me for this workshop is Griff Smith, award winning photographer from Texas Highways Magazine.  Learn how Griff captures images that have motivated thousands of travelers to drive the highways and byways in Texas.  From our base at the historic Rose Mansion in Salado you'll learn how he tells a story in photographs.

Workshop Packed Full of Fun

Nobody has ever accused me of hosting workshops that aren't fun.  We simply have a great time.  Even last year when wildflower conditions weren't their best we found field of beautiful wildflower displays.  And in the evening we enjoyed smoked salmon cheese and wine.  It's a tough job, but someone has to do it.

If you don't sign up, what will you be missing?

If you don't sign up you'll be missing one really great time.  This year we're planning on covering...

  • Photographing Texas Wildflowers

  • Macro Photography

  • Composing dynamic images with hyperfocal techniques

  • Working with artificial light.  On camera flash, studio lighting and more

  • Learn to control light

  • Light-paining - This is so much fun it should be illegal.

  • Become the master of you camera meter

  • Coopers Barbeque - yum yum...

  • Digital processing using Lightroom and Photoshop

  • Creative photographic techniques

  • One-on-one and classroom critique

  • And much much more..

This is the only workshop where you can enjoy the expert instruction of two outstanding photographers.  Joining me in Salado is Griff Smith, one of Texas' most notable photographers and a full time shooter for Texas Highways magazine.

Gulf States Camera Club Council 2007 Convention in Plano, Texas

This year's Gulf States Camera Club Council Convention is going to be held in Plano, Texas, Thursday, April 19 to 22, 2007.   It was moved from New Orleans due to the ongoing rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina so this is a great opportunity to see some of the areas top presenters (including yours truly) and also participate in some wonderful field trips and workshops.

To learn more about the convention and to register visit the conference website at www.focusonplano.com

My presentation at the event will be called After the Sunset and deals with nighttime photography.  I'll be presenting on Friday morning at 8:30am so come with a hot cup of coffee for and learn all about flash and nighttime photography.

Two Versions of Photoshop CS3??

That's right.  In just a few weeks Adobe will be rolling out the new Photoshop CS3 in two different versions; Photoshop CS3 and Photoshop CS3 Extended.  Don't worry about needing another expensive product.  The Photoshop CS3 Extended is intended for film and video professionals and folks needing 3D images.

The new Photoshop CS3 is ideal for photographers and designers and delivers new features such as automatic layer alignment and blending that enable advanced compositing. Live filters boost the comprehensive, nondestructive editing toolset for increased flexibility. And a streamlined interface and new, timesaving tools make your work flow faster.

If you just can't wait you can download the CS3 Beta but I'd advise against it since I've not found it very stable.  In fact today I was trying to use the new CS3 Bridge and it would not show images in different directories.

Scan Multiple Images at One Time

Crop and Straighten Image

The Crop and Straighten Photos command helps you make separate image files from multiple images in a single scan. For best results, you should keep 1/8 inch between the images in your scan, and the background (typically the scanner bed) should be a uniform color with little noise. The Crop and Straighten Photos command works best on images with clearly delineated outlines.

If the Crop And Straighten Photos command cannot process a complex image file, use the Crop tool.

1.    Open the scanned file that contains the images you want to separate.

2.    Select the layer that contains the images. Alternatively, draw a selection border around one or more images to generate just those images into separate files.

3.    Choose File > Automate > Crop And Straighten Photos. The scanned images are processed, and then each image opens in its own window.

4.    If the Crop And Straighten Photos command incorrectly splits one of your images, make a selection border around the image and some background, and then hold down Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) when you choose the command. The modifier key indicates only one image should be separated from the background.
