Paint the World in Arches National Park
March 28 - April 1, 2007

**LAST CHANCE TO SIGN UP**

Time is quickly running out to sign up for one of the most exciting workshops that I've ever offered.  Light-painting in Arches National Park!

I still have some spots available for this great workshop so if you're thinking about going be sure to sign up today so you don't miss this great opportunity.

Delicate Arch, at right, was shot shortly after sunset and painted with a 1 Million candlepower flashlight - this technique gives the formation an ethereal look.  Now, imagine a huge rock formation painted with over 100 million candlepower.

Deep in the Heart of Texas
April 11 - 15, 2007

Texas is famous for its wildflowers and Salado for its historic homes and quaint shops and restaurants. This GreatPhotography workshop gives you the best that Texas has to offer. You'll split your time between the Texas Hill Country enjoying the tapestry of colorful wildflowers, and the quaint historic atmosphere of Salado's Rose Mansion where you'll have the opportunity to not only photograph history but to relive it when you stay in one of the mansions many historic rooms.

This is the only workshop where you can enjoy the expert instruction of two outstanding photographers.  Joining me in Salado is Griff Smith, one of Texas' most notable photographers and a full time shooter for Texas Highways magazine.

Adobe ships Lightroom 1.0

Years of research and development at Adobe Systems has resulted in the introduction of Adobe Lightroom 1.0.

Photoshop Lightroom enables professional photographers to import, manage and present large volumes of digital photographs.

It is arguably the best RAW conversion program available and will also provide RAW type processing for other image file types.  Lightroom does NOT work like other programs - all the editing done in Lightroom is non-destructive, meaning that it never changes your original image file.

Time will tell exactly how it will fit into your workflow and also how it fits into Adobe's product family.  It essentially replaces Adobe Bridge and provides much more control over the global editing tools in Photoshop.  I find the Levels and Curves in Lightroom much better than Photoshop.

Lightroom is divided into  five modules; Library, Develop, Slideshow, Print and Web.  The Print module is one of the most flexible and powerful print engines available.  You can create wonderful web pages using the Web module and slide shows, complete with music, are a snap.

For those that love to develop intricate slide shows, using tools like Pro Show Gold, Lightroom is not a replacement.  To define music for playback, windows users simply point to a folder that contains mp3 files.  (Mac users use iTunes playlists).  This does not allow you to synchronize music or use multiple tracks.  Also, slide duration and fades are defined on a global basis so you can't control any individual slides.

The real power of Lightroom is in the Develop module and I think that once you understand how it works you'll be hooked.  But don't expect a silver bullet to solve all your problems.  Lightroom falls far short for archiving and cataloging your images but the features it does offer are both revolutionary and powerful.

Pricing and Availability

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom shipped late February at an introductory price of $199.  This is a $100 discount of the regular price of $299 and is available through April 30, 2007.

New Adobe Camera RAW Update (3.7)

There are several significant changes in Camera RAW support for Adobe Photoshop so whether you need support for a new camera model or not, you may want to update your Camera RAW to the latest 3.7 version.

The new Camera RAW 3.7 will work with Photoshop CS2, Elements 4.0, Elements 5.0 and Premier Elements 3.0.  Although Adobe says that CS2 users can update the Camera RAW plug-in automatically using the Update tool listed under the Help menu, it didn't work for me.  I had no problems with the manual installation.

One significant change you'll notice is that Adobe is cleaning up the Auto adjustments.  There is no longer support for per-slider auto adjustments, instead you have one auto control at the top of the panel.

Under the covers, the Camera RAW is enhanced to ensure compatibility with the new Adobe Lightroom.

Adobe Photoshop Tips

Non-Destructive Cloning

Cloning has been one of the core tools in Photoshop since the very beginning and it is a tool that many photographers find invaluable.  Unfortunately many photographers also clone directly on the background or image layer which permanently alters the image data – a destructive editing technique.  But, there is a non-destructive solution and this simple solutions not only works with cloning but with other tools like the Healing Brush, Spot Healing Brush, Clone Stamp and Magic Eraser.

Each of these tools has the option “Sample All Layers”.  You can take advantage of this function by following a few simple steps:

v  Create a New Layer above the image that you will clone and make this the active layer

v  Click on the Clone tool and be sure that the “Sample All Layers” option is checked

v  Now simply clone the image onto the new layer.  Because you’re not altering the image data itself you can always erase and start over.
